SOWETO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL MEDIA LAUNCH: AFRICAN-ROOTED FILM FESTIVAL BASED IN THE CULTURALLY RICH TOWNSHIP

In the heart of Soweto’s vibrant creative scene, two powerhouse events—the Soweto Film
Market and the Soweto International Film Festival (SIFF)—are joining forces in 2025 to
redefine Africa’s film industry. The Film Market will launch at an exclusive event on 12 June
this year’s collaboration promises an unparalleled platform where storytellers, investors, and
audiences converge to celebrate, fund, and amplify African narratives on the world stage.
A Legacy of Launching Legends.
The Soweto International Film Festival has long been a springboard for African filmmakers,
with a track record of discovering breakout hits like Kedibone (now streaming on Netflix) and
the internationally acclaimed documentary Soweto Drift. Over the years, SIFF has nurtured
emerging talent through its award-winning competitions, masterclasses, and partnerships
with organisations such as the Writers Guild of South Africa and Animation SA.
Now, the Soweto Film Market builds on this legacy, transforming the festival’s creative
energy into tangible business opportunities.
Festival Director and CEO, Thapelo “Tabz” Motloung is the visionary founder of TT
Media and driving force behind the Soweto Film Market. He brings his unique blend of
creative genius and business acumen, with experience ranging from electrifying presenter of
of eTV’s STUMBO RECORD BREAKERS to producing short films.
“This isn’t just about screenings; it’s about deals,” he says. “We’re connecting filmmakers
with the tools, funding, and global networks they need to thrive.”
2025: The Year of Action.
This year’s program is designed to turn vision into reality:
Pitch to Powerhouses: Filmmakers can present projects to heavyweights
like Paramount Africa (BET Africa), Netflix, and Indigenous Film Distribution, with
support from sponsors NFVF and Foton.
Learn from the Best: Hands-on mobile workshops and masterclasses will tackle
everything from budget filmmaking to distribution strategies, led by veterans and
innovators.
Community at the Core: Free screenings at the Ikusasalethu Youth
Centre and Soweto Old Age Home will bridge generations, proving that great stories
resonate everywhere.
A Network of Opportunity
The Market’s strength lies in its partnerships. Alongside SIFF stalwarts like Urbanbrew
Studios and Arena Holdings, new allies Film Finity and Cape Town Film Studios are
expanding opportunities for funding and production. “This is where relationships are built,”
notes Dr. Kani, SIFF’s Strategic Advisor. “Our community—filmmakers, investors, and
audiences—is our greatest asset.”
Join the Movement
From November 19–22, Soweto will be the epicentre of African film business. Whether
you’re a filmmaker seeking funding, an investor hunting for fresh talent, or a film lover eager
to witness the next wave of African cinema, the Soweto Film Market 2025 is your invitation
to be part of the story.
