Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi held an enlightening media briefing following the Executive Committee (EXCO) meeting, which convened to discuss pivotal service delivery matters and strategic initiatives that will enhance the municipality. The atmosphere was charged with optimism as Lesufi detailed significant updates and commitments to the people of Gauteng.

Among the main highlights was progress on various infrastructure projects. Lesufi reported ongoing efforts towards road rehabilitation, water reticulation, and electrification across multiple wards. These projects aim to improve the quality of life for residents and enhance the province’s overall infrastructure resilience.

The Premier elaborated on the province’s financial health during the briefing. The Finance Portfolio presented the third-quarter performance report, revealing encouraging trends in revenue collection and a strong alignment in budget expenditure. This fiscal improvement signals a commitment to responsible governance and the efficient use of public resources.

In matters of community safety, Premier Lesufi reaffirmed strengthened collaboration between municipal law enforcement, the police, and private security agencies. He detailed efforts being made to curb crime rates in local communities, underlining the urgency of crime as a priority highlighted in his recent State of the Province Address. “Our commitment to tracking and apprehending those responsible for major crimes has yielded significant results,” he stated, revealing that over 150 offenders have been apprehended from a pool of 450 identified criminals.

Tragically, despite advancements in tackling cash-in-transit robberies and kidnappings, Lesufi acknowledged that incidents of gender-based violence and femicide continue to rise alarmingly. “Sadly, reported cases of gender-based violence and femicide are not decreasing as we expect them to,” he remarked, signalling a need for continued focus and action.

The Premier disclosed an agreement enabling Gauteng municipal law enforcement agencies and police to collaborate across municipal borders. He noted, “We now work together. We had a major operation in the Vaal last month, and next month, we’ll be in Ekurhuleni for a joint operation.” The long-term goal, he explained, is an intensified strategy targeting crime in the Johannesburg CBD.

Lesufi concluded with a promise of transparency and inclusivity, stating, “We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance. Detailed resolutions from the meeting will be made available through our official website and community platforms.” This commitment aims to foster a more informed and engaged citizenry as Gauteng moves forward.
