SOWETO THEATRE CELEBRATES ELDERS WITH “UKHISIMUSI WABADALA”- A CHRISTMAS OF GRATITUDE AND GIVING
This December, the Soweto Theatre will once again open its doors and its heart to the community’s senior citizens for a special Christmas celebration titled “Ukhisimusi Wabadala” — a joyful and heartfelt tribute to the elders who continue to shape and nurture our society.
The event will honour 200 elders aged 70 years and older from Ward 34 and surrounding communities, “Ukhisimusi Wabadala” is more than just a festive event — it’s a day of reflection, thanksgiving, and celebration of our living ancestors, our prayer warriors, and the custodians of wisdom who have carried the spirit of Ubuntu through generations.
“This event forms part of Soweto Theatre’s ongoing commitment to community upliftment, social inclusion, and the celebration of cultural identity through the arts” says Soweto Theatre’s Acting General Manager Didi Sole.
The day’s programme will include:
• A welcome by the Soweto Theatre Youth Orchestra and performances by local artists.
• Wellness and lifestyle activities, including gentle exercise sessions, health talks, health screenings
• A Christmas luncheon
• A Christmas theatrical production in the Gibson Kente Theatre.
• The distribution of Christmas gift packages, symbolising love and appreciation for our elders.
In the spirit of partnership, Soweto Theatre has extended an invitation to Ward 34 Councillor Lucas Lefutso to assist in identifying the elders who will participate in the event. The Theatre also continues to welcome support from community members, local businesses, and partners who wish to contribute towards this initiative — whether through donations, services, or sponsorships.
