RAMAPHOSA, AS SANDF SWOOPS ON ILLEGAL MINING

Loading

President Cyril Ramaphosa explained that the current deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) against gangsterism and illegal mining is different from past deployments.

The army is being used as a “force multiplier” — supporting police in high-risk operations, cordon-and-search activities, roadblocks, and securing critical infrastructure.

SANDF is working alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS), National Prosecuting Authority, and Crime Intelligence to dismantle gangs and illegal mining networks.

Ramaphosa emphasized that communities have welcomed the soldiers, noting that the SANDF is now seen as serving and protecting rather than instilling fear.

Soldiers are already active in Gauteng and will also be deployed in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, and North West.
