It was a beautiful day at the Soweto Cricket Oval, perfect for cricket on a good batting wicket. Soweto Pioneers, put in to bat first, made 205 all out in 37.2 overs — a total that promised more than it delivered. The innings never quite settled as wickets fell regularly, but Kgomotso Dintoe lit up the Oval with a blistering 71 off 44 balls, striking seven fours and three sixes. He found support from Tebogo Bidli, whose composed 25 off 23 balls helped the pair add a crucial partnership that lifted Soweto from 95/6 to 188, giving hope of a strong finish. Just as they looked set to push past 220, both fell quickly, and the innings folded earlier than planned.

With the ball, Bidli again led the way, taking 2 for 24 in a sharp opening spell that offered early breakthroughs. But on a wicket that became truer as the day went on, Old Parktonians steadied through Oliver McJannet and Andrew Holmes, whose 152-run partnership took the game away from Soweto after being 43/2. McJannet’s composed 112 was the difference, guiding his side to a comfortable six-wicket win.
Soweto showed flashes of brilliance — Dintoe’s explosive batting and Bidli’s disciplined all-round effort stood out — but the inability to bat deep and sustain partnerships proved costly. With small improvements, the Pioneers will know their first home win isn’t far away.
