The Enza Construction 50 overs competition match saw PAV Soweto Pioneers CC face the league-leading University of Johannesburg 1st XI in a highly competitive fixture, which was reduced to 33 overs due to a wet outfield. Captain Grant Mokoena won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Pioneers’ bowlers performed admirably against a strong batting line-up, focused on breaking long partnerships.
Lazarus Mokoena led the wicket tally with 3/68 (including the dismissal of UJ’s top-scorer Juan Minnaar (46)). However, the attack was anchored by the superb control of Nkanyiso Mkhize, who was the most economical mainline bowler with figures of 1/31 from 7 overs (Econ 4.4). He was well supported by Siphamandla Mungeka (2/30, Econ 5.0) and Nqaba Matunda (2/42, Econ 6.0). Despite these tight figures, UJ reached a challenging total of 217 all out.
In pursuit of 218, the Pioneers mounted a strong chase built on two key partnerships. An opening stand of 70 runs between Nkosana Sibiya, who scored 62(54), and Bulumko Magatya, who scored 28(30), provided the platform. The innings was anchored by a spectacular effort from Mashudu Khangala, who batted through to finish on a heroic 75(80) not out. Despite Khangala’s determination, the late fall of wickets, primarily to UJ’s Nico Joost Van Der Westhuizen (3/28), saw the Pioneers fall agonizingly short, finishing on 212 for 7 after 33 overs and losing the match by just 5 runs.
We look to bounce back next Sunday as we play next Sunday at Randburg CC in a bottom-of-the-league fixture.
