GAUTENG DRIVES INNOVATION WITH LAUNCH OF SANDTON SMART DRIVER LICENCE TESTING CENTRE

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, today, Wednesday, 29 July 2026, officially launched the modernised Gautrain Sandton Station Smart Driver Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) in Sandton, Johannesburg, marking another milestone in the Province’s drive to modernise public services and improve access to licensing services through innovation and technology.

Strategically located at Gautrain Sandton Station in the heart of Sandton, the state-of-the-art facility is set to redefine the licensing experience by delivering greater convenience, professionalism and efficiency to motorists across Gauteng.

The Smart Driver Licence Testing Centre offers a comprehensive range of driver and motor vehicle licensing services. These include the renewal of driving licences for all licence codes, duplicate driving licences, applications for Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs), changes of personal particulars, payment of AARTO infringements, motor vehicle licence disc renewals, vehicle registration and licensing, and changes of vehicle ownership.

Designed to transform customer experience, the Smart DLTC provides faster, more efficient and customer-centric services by bringing essential licensing services closer to where residents live, work and commute. The centre also reduces waiting times while improving convenience and accessibility.

Speaking at the launch, MEC Diale-Tlabela said the opening of the Sandton Smart DLTC demonstrates the Gauteng Provincial Government’s commitment to building a modern, efficient and responsive public service.

“We are handing over this facility to the people of Gauteng for your benefit and convenience. We encourage you to make full use of the services available here, whether it is renewing your driver’s licence, your motor vehicle licence, or accessing other licensing services.
This facility is part of our commitment to growing Gauteng into a province that delivers modern, efficient and accessible government services to all its residents,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela.

Operating from 08:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays, the centre has been designed to accommodate working residents who require flexible access to government services.

The Sandton Smart DLTC becomes the seventh Smart Driver Licence Testing Centre operating in Gauteng, joining facilities at Umphakathi Mall, Denlyn Mall, Atteridgeville Mall, Protea Glen Mall, Maponya Mall and Gautrain Midrand Station.

The smart licensing centres streamline processes through modern technology, eliminating long waiting times and unnecessary paperwork while delivering a seamless customer experience. Their strategic locations at shopping centres and Gautrain stations make government services more accessible and convenient for residents across Gauteng.

The Smart DLTC model incorporates advanced digital enrolment technology and cashless payment systems, enabling licence renewal transactions to be completed in approximately 10 minutes. The centres operate strictly on an appointment basis, eliminating the need for intermediaries and promoting transparent, corruption-free service delivery. Law enforcement officials are deployed at the facilities to uphold integrity and ensure compliance with licensing regulations.

MEC Diale-Tlabela said the launch of the centre advances the Gauteng Provincial Government’s #GrowingGautengTogether vision through the Smart Mobility Programme, which leverages technology to improve transport services. It also supports the Department’s #AgaLeRona# service delivery accelerator, aimed at expanding access to licensing services in townships and underserved communities.
