South Africa’s premier youth football development tournament, the Engen Knockout Challenge has officially been launched for 2026 with Engen unveiling the competition’s new theme: “Where Diski Legends Start”.

The launch, held at Engen’s Head Office in Cape Town on Monday, brought together football stakeholders, partners and clubs ahead of another exciting season that will kick off at Eria Park in Cape Town between 26 – 28 June.
For over two decades (23-years), the Engen Knockout Challenge has served as a steppingstone for many of South Africa’s leading football talents, while also creating opportunities for the wider football ecosystem to develop and thrive.
Speaking at the launch, Engen Communications Manager Gavin Smith said the new theme reflects the tournament’s broader impact beyond producing professional footballers.
“The Engen Knockout Challenge has produced stars who have gone on to play professionally and internationally, but it is also about the memories that are created along the way. Not everyone will become a professional footballer, but many will cherish the experience of being involved in a competition like this for the rest of their lives.”
Smith explained that the concept of a “legend” extends far beyond what happens on the football field.
“We often focus on the players who become stars, but a legend is really a story. It is something you take away from the tournament. These are the moments and memories that participants speak about at school the next day and carry with them for years to come. Those stories eventually become the legends of tomorrow, and we believe the Engen Knockout Challenge continues to be a catalyst for creating those experiences.”
The tournament’s contribution to football development was echoed by SAFA Cape Town Vice-President Andrew Borthman, who thanked Engen for its continued investment in grassroots football.
“Without partnerships such as this, we would not be able to fulfil some of our mandates as SAFA Cape Town when it comes to developing talent. The talent developed through the Engen Knockout Challenge is not limited to players. It also includes coaches, referees, administrators and many others who play an important role in football development. We look forward to another exciting and impactful Engen Knockout Challenge.”
Monday’s launch also saw the official draw of the Cape Town leg of the competition which sees Boys U-18 defending champions, Cape Town City headlining a tough Group C consisting of Hellenic, Central Schools Football and South End FC.
Defending champions in the Girls U-20 division, Cape Town Roses headline an interesting Group A pool consisting of Spurs WFC, HBU FC and OTHA United.
