Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos was happy with the performance of the South African senior men’s national team, even though his charges were held to a goalless draw by Nicaragua in an international friendly match played at Orlando Stadium on Friday night.

The Central American visitors defended as if their lives depended on it, but while Broos said he would have loved to see the hosts win their final match at home before departure to North America, he was happy with the performance of a team that was without several senior players. As he had promised on the eve of the match, the Belgian mentor rested the Mamelodi Sundowns players as they only returned to South Africa on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, after beating Morocco side AS Far to win the CAF Champions League final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday, 24 May 2026.

“Maybe it will surprise you a little bit when I say I am happy with the performance of the team when the result was not what we expected,” Broos said, adding that it was a very difficult game.

Bafana Bafana will jet out to Mexico on Sunday, 31 May 2026. Mexico will host Bafana Bafana in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 11, 2026, at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, and this game will mark the start of the 48-team tournament.

This year’s FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July 2026.
